Moving a refrigerator – the “How to” guide:
The following steps will be your guide to safely and effectively move your refrigerator
from your existing home to your new home. If you follow these steps properly, then it
will assure that moving this appliance will be a success.
Step 1: Remove all contents of the refrigerator and freezer –
You may want to start eating the perishable items one to two
weeks prior to your move.
This will eliminate a lot of the food that may go bad or have
to be stored elsewhere
during the move.Remember to check all drawers and shelves.
Remove all condiments, ice trays, etc.
Step 2: Remove all the shelves –
Remove all lose components of the fridge.
Shelves
Drawers
Organizers
Dividers
Another option is to secure the lose items in the refrigerator with duct tape.
Step 3: Unplug and defrost –
Unplug the refrigerator, tape the cord to the back so it is secure during the move.
Unplug any water hoses that may run to you ice maker.
Allow the freezer to defrost overnight and be sure to wipe out any excess water in the morning.
Step 4: Secure the fridge and have proper tools –
Close the refrigerator and freezer doors tight, then secure them shut with a strong rope or strong bungee cord.
In some instances the refrigerator doors may need to be removed to fit through smaller door frames. If this occurs,
no need to stress, just grab the proper tools to remove the doors and continue.
Step 5: Proper tools and helpers –
The most important tool to have during this move is a moving dolly. This will prevent anyone from having to physically lift the refrigerator.
Also, have plenty of helpers, you want one pushing the dolly, one guiding the dolly from the opposite side and preferably a person each side to help guide to avoid tipping of the refrigerator.
Step 6: Moving and loading the refrigerator –
Slide the refrigerator on the dolly and push it using the assistance of your helpers.
Tilt it refrigerator back slightly and secure it to the dolly.
Follow a path that will be the easiest route from the home to the moving truck.
Load the refrigerator in to the moving truck and prepare to unload at the new home.
Congratulations! You have successfully moved your refrigerator!
